Assumptions of brick masonry loads

  • Nominal dimensions of brick are 90x120x190, while the actual dimensions are approximately 85x115x185 resulting to weight≈17 N. The number of bricks of running rowlock stretcher brick masonry (thickness 85 mm) 39/m2 and the number of bricks of running stretcher brick masonry (thickness 115 mm) 52/m2.

  • Mortar joint 10 mm thick, of density 1.8 t/m3

  • Mortar plaster 20 mm thick and marble plaster 5 mm thick, of density 1.8 t/m3

  • Reinforced concrete bands of depth 120 mm at vertical spacing of 2.50 m, of density 2.5 t/m3

  • Insulation material of density 30 kg/m3=0.03 t/m3 (almost insignificant compared to the rest)

The nomenclature of the examples on the table refers to the dimensions used by the builder following the corresponding dimensions of the woodworker whose nominal dimensions are the dimensions of the intended actual size of the completed masonry. Although the names as well as the layers of the walls vary they should certainly express the common practice.

The calculation of the linear wall loads of the example is based on the estimation of clear wall height of 2.50 m and the assumption that frames do not exist. Clear is being defined as the height from the level of the concrete slab of the storey's floor to the lower face of the beam of the storey's roof.
